Prague 1, Strahov Monastery
A jewel among Prague's monuments deserves oak
The beautiful oak windows by Trustav adorn the Strahov Monastery, officially known as the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov. It is the oldest Premonstratensian monastery in Bohemia, founded in 1143. It is located in the picturesque part of Prague 1 – Hradčany.
History and Architecture
The monastery was founded by the Bishop of Olomouc, Jindřich Zdík, and Duke Vladislav II. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous architectural transformations, from Romanesque to Gothic and later Baroque styles. The most significant parts include the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Theological and Philosophical Halls of the Strahov Library, and the Strahov Picture Gallery.
Strahov Library
The Strahov Library is one of the oldest and most valuable libraries in the world, housing over 200,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and incunabula. Visitors can admire the beautifully decorated Theological and Philosophical Halls, considered some of the most exquisite library halls in the world.
